EndNote is a computer program which can help with referencing and intext citations for your studies.

Common EndNote Problems

Below are answers to some common problems people have when using EndNote.

1) THE ENDNOTE TOOLBAR DOES NOT DISPLAY IN MICROSOFT WORD

ANSWER:  Go to the following EndNote FAQ and follow the instructions

2) MY CORPORATE AUTHORS DO NOT DISPLAY PROPERLY

e.g. When I put in Ministry of Health it appears as Health, M. O.

ANSWER:  In the author field in your EndNote Library, make sure that there is a comma at the end of the corporate author, eg Ministry of Health, or World Health Organization,

 

3) I HAVE INITIALS APPEARING IN MY CITATION

e.g. When I enter some of my authors the citation in Microsoft Word 2007 appears with the initials, eg (M. E. Goldgerg and Wurts, 1972).

ANSWER:  This is correct according to APA-6th edition, where you have two authors with the same surname. even if the year of publication differs.  (See page 176 of the Publication manual of the American Psychological Association 6th ed., for more information).

 

4) MY IN-TEXT CITATIONS ARE NOT DISPLAYING IN THE CORRECT FORMAT

e.g. When I enter my in-text citation, it looks like this {Breslau, 1962 #203}.

ANSWER:  This means the instant formating function of 'Cite While You Write' (CWYW) has been turned off.  In Microsoft Word, click on the small arrow at the bottom right of the bibliography box. Click the Instant Formatting tab and then click the 'Turn On' button.

 

5) I CANNOT EXPORT FROM DATABASES USING A MAC

ANSWER:  There is a known problem with exporting to EndNote if you are using Safari or IE as your search engine on a MAC. Try using Mozilla Firefox as your search engine.  This program can be download free from here

 

6) MY WORD DOCUMENT SUDDENLY CONTAINS STRANGE CHARACTERS AND FIELD CODES

e.g. {ADDIN EN.CITE>EndNote<>Cite<>Author<>Year<>1992<

>RecNum<>6<>Rec Num<>record<>rec-number<>6>

/rec-number<>keyen=EN...

 

ANSWER:  You have turned on the field codes in your document. Hit the ALT and F9 keys together and the field codes will disappear with the document returning to normal. 

 

7) MY REFERENCE LIST/BIBLOGRAPHY IS NOT DISPLAYING IN THE CORRECT FONT

ANSWER:  In Microsoft Word 2007, go to the Endnote tab and click on the arrow at the bottom right of the bibliography.  When the Format bibliography box appears, click on the layout tab.  Change the font and size to the one you require using the drop down menus.  Your document will be reformatted.
