How to request an item

Follow the steps below to request an item:

  1. Log into LibrarySearch (top right) - enter your Unitec email address (eg) smithj07@myunitec.ac.nz and password.
  2. Search for the item you want.
  3. Click on the Find in Library tab to see where the item is and click the Request link. 
  4. Select the location you would like to pick up the item from, and the date after which the item is not required.  None of the other fields are necessary.
  5. Click on the Request button.  You will be notified by email and TXT when a copy is available for you pick up from the location you selected.

Note*

  • We will notify you by email (and by TXT if you register your mobile number) when the item is ready for you to pick up. Make sure you have set up to receive library notices (see how to set up library notices here) as usually you have 5 days from date of notice to pick up the item.
  • To receive library email alerts, you need to make sure that your preferred email address at MyPortal is correct. To receive library TXT alert , see how to set it up in MyPortal.
  • If Unitec Library does not have the item you require, you may be able to interloan it from another academic library. 

How to book a short loan item

If the item you want is a high-demand item and on short loan, you will be able to book it. The book will then be able for you when you want it.

  1. Log in to LibrarySearch (top right).
  2. Enter your Unitec email address (eg) smithj07@myunitec.ac.nz and password.
  3. Search for the item you want to book.
  4. Click on the Find in Library tab to see where the item is and click the Request link. 
  5. Select the Booking radio button.
  6. Click on the Check availability link to see if there are current bookings on this item: Yellow means "library is closed"; Pink means "unavailable"; White means "available";
  7. Fill in the date and times you wish to have this item and click Request.

*Notes:

  • You will not be able to book an item for longer than its short-term loan period. That is, if there is only a 2 hour loan item held, you cannot book it for more than 2 hours.
  • Item is only available at the location it is currently on short-loan.
  • You need to come to the desk and ask for the item you have booked.
  • You must pick up your booked item within 20 minutes of the start time.
  • You will not receive an email regarding the booking.
  • You can only have maximum three booking requests of three different titles, and one booking per title.
  • Future limits of Booking requests (how far into the future a booking can be made):
    • For 2 hour loans, up to 7 days in advance.
    • For 24 hour loans, up to 7 days in advance.
    • For 3 day loans, up to 21 days in advance.

What if the book is at another branch?

  1. Log into LibrarySearch (top right) - enter your Unitec email address (eg) smithj07@myunitec.ac.nz and password.
  2. Search for the book you want.
  3. Click on the Find in Library tab (just under the record of the book) to see where the book is usually located. If the only available copy of this title is held at another branch, you can request it to be transferred to your preferred pick-up location.  NOTE: Short loan items cannot be transferred to a different location.
  4. Click on the Request link.  This will take you directly to the Request tab. 
  5. Select the location you would like the book to be delivered to - ie your "pick up" location. 
  6. Click on the Request button.  
  7. You will be notified by email and (if you have opted in) text message when the book is available for you to pick up.

Why request a book?

You may wish to request a book if:

  1. The book you want is on loan to someone else. See what if the book has been borrowed.
  2. The book is held at another branch.  You can use the request function to have the book transferred to your preferred pick-up location. See what if the book is at another branch.
  3. If the item you want is a high-demand item and on short loan. You can request it by placing a booking request.

What if the book has been borrowed?

If the book has been loaned by someone else, you can put a request on the book, so that the person who currently holds the book cannot renew it. You will get an email/TXT alert when the book is returned.

How to check/cancel my request

To check the status of your request, or to cancel your request

  1. Log into LibrarySearch (top right) - enter your Unitec email address (eg) smithj07@myunitec.ac.nz and password.
  2. Click My Account (top right).
  3. Highlight the My Account tab and click on Requests to see all your requests.
  4. Click Cancel button to cancel your request.
