Why is Open Access important?

The key purpose of open access journals is to improve affordability and access to published material, and to allow authors and users greater rights of reuse in relation to a work.  Additionally, material published in open access journals maybe made available to the public faster than material published in subscription journals.

Many OA advocates support this unrestricted access because they believe the results of tax-payer funded research should be shared; since citizens have paid for this research, they should be able to access it at no additional charge. They also think that further research is enhanced if researchers can access related research when they need to.
